Suzanne G. Cusick, Professor of Music at the Faculty of Arts and Science at New York University, has published extensively on gender and sexuality in relation to the musical cultures of early modern Italy and of contemporary North America. Her book, Francesca Caccini at the Medici Court: Music and the Circulation of Power (2009) received the Best Book Award in 2010 from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women, and her work on acoustical and gender-based torture in the 21st-century’s “war on terror” received the Philip Brett Award from the American Musicological Society in 2007. The recipient of many fellowships and grants, in 2014 Cusick was named an Honorary Member of the American Musicological Society. She is currently working on a book that explores the relationship among the erotic, the sonic and the political in early modern Florence, through a retelling of the city’s most notorious sex-and-singing-nun scandal.
