An alumnus and former dean of the Faculty of Music, John Beckwith is known for his over 150 compositions for stage, orchestral, chamber, solo and choral genres, as well as his work as a staff writer and critic for outlets such as CBC and the Toronto Star. Beckwith holds honorary doctorates from five Canadian universities, was recipient of the Canadian Music Council’s annual medal in 1972 and Composer of the Year citation in 1984, as well as the Toronto Arts Award for music in 1995 and the Diplôme d’honneur of the Canadian Conference of the Arts in 1996. In 1987 he was named a Member of the Order of Canada. Beckwith will present his lecture, CanMus Then and Now, on a comparison between musical life in the centennial year, 1967, and 50 years later in the sesquicentennial year, 2017.
