Join the Faculty of Music & Hart House for our Play it Loud! event, celebrating the vibrant legacy of Jamaican music in Canada. Learn about the life and artistry of Jay Douglas, a local living legend - an elder whose knowledge and experience is rooted in decades of musicianship and artistry across the GTA, Canada, Jamaica, and beyond. Douglas began performing professionally at 17 and never stopped. The documentary tells the little-known story of how Jamaican music became a critical part of Canadian culture, revealing a social and cultural migration that made Canada a hub for Jamaican music recognized around the world. Award-winning Jamaican-Canadian documentary filmmaker (director of Play it Loud! and Sounds & Pressure: Reggae in a Foreign Land), Graeme Mathieson will also join us. We’ll have two students leading the post-screening discussion with Jay & Graeme and tasty refreshments will be served to kick the evening off.

You can attend in person or virtually and if you can’t make it, you can watch Play it Loud! for free anytime

Time: Refreshments from 5-6pm, Screening from 6-7:30pm, Discussion at 7:40pm
