Social Justice in music education: Some remarks from a German perspective
Social justice has become one of the key issues in current music education research. The discourse in different countries is marked by different phenomena and social stratifications. A common point of reference for both the North American and the German discourse is “critical theory.” However, this umbrella term is understood and interpreted in quite different ways. It may be worthwhile to discuss these traditions to seek a deeper understanding. The presentation will feature both theoretical considerations and results from empirical studies undertaken at the Hannover Institute for Music Education Research.
Prof. Andreas Lehmann-Wermser Andreas was born in 1955. He studied Music Education, German Literature, and Educational Science, and graduated from Hannover University of Music and Drama and Media in 1981. After two decades of teaching in secondary schools in Northern Germany, he returned to Hannover and received a Ph.D. in 2002. Moving on to Bremen University in 2004, he built up a research group applying mostly empirical methods and conducted several large third-party funded research projects focused on classroom research and social justice. In 2015, Andreas was appointed full professor and became director of the Institute for Music Education Research in Hannover. His work and his publications have received broad attention in many European countries.
