Gryphon Trio takes home JUNO for Classical Album of the Year (Solo or Chamber)

19 March 2019

After 25 years together, you might expect the Gryphon Trio, violinist and faculty member Annalee Patipatanakoon, cellist Roman Borys, and pianist and faculty member James Parker, to take some well deserved time off. But 2019 is proving to be an exciting year for this dynamic piano trio who picked up its third JUNO at the awards held in London, Ontario over the weekend. Nominated in two Classical Album of the Year categories, the Gryphons won for The End of Flowers (Solo or Chamber), a recording featuring works by Maurice Ravel and Rebecca Clarke. Also nominated in the Large Ensemble category, that award went to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for Vaughan Williams, a collaborative effort with soloists and Faculty of Music alumni Emily D’Angelo, Lawrence Wiliford, Carla Huhtanen and Sarah Jeffrey.

Earlier this year, during the same week that the Gryphons received their double-nomination, they announced their appointment as Directors Designate of Classical Music Summer Programs at The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity beginning in 2019-20. Read the full story

Alumna and University of Toronto honorary degree recipient Barbara Hannigan won for Vienna: Fin de sièole with Reinbert De Leeuw in the Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral category. This is Hannigan's second JUNO Award, following last year's win for Crazy Girl Crazy, which also won a Grammy Award.

Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners of the 2019 JUNO Awards!
