Junos & Doras: U of T Music Winners

Once again, the faculty, alumni and students of the University of Toronto Faculty of Music have won a wide range of this year’s Juno and Dora awards.

The Juno for ‘Classical Album of the Year: Solo or Chamber’ went to harpist, alumna and instructor Angela Schwarzkopf for her debut album detach which showcases compositions by Canadian composers.

The Juno for ‘Jazz Album of the Year: Group’ was won by Ernesto Cervini’s Turboprop for Abundance featuring alumni  and faculty members Ernesto Cervini and Tara Davidson, as well as faculty member William Carn.

‘Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral’ Juno went to the Ottawa Bach Choir, conducted by Lisette Canton, for their latest album Handel: Dixit Dominus; Bach & Schutz: Motets which features soloists faculty member Daniel Taylor and alumna Kayla Ruiz.

At the 2020 Doras, U of T Music was equally well represented.

Shanawdithit, presented by Tapestry Opera and written by alumnus composer Dean Burry, was selected for ‘Outstanding New Opera.’ Shanawdithit tells the compelling and important story of Shanawdithit, the last of the Beothuk tribe of present-day Newfoundland.

Faculty member Eliot Britton and Rick Sacks received the Dora for ‘Outstanding Original Sound Composition: Dance’ for their work on Red Sky Performance’s production AF. This contemporary dance and physical story-telling production explores Anishinaabe fire prophecies which foretell of a pivotal moment where humanity will face the ultimate choice.

The Dora for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble (Opera)’ was won by Soundstream’s Two Odysseys: Pimooteewin / Gállábártnit, an ensemble which includes alumni Jonathan MacArthur and Bryan Martin. Two Odysseys presents a double-bill of the world’s first operas in the languages of Cree and Sámi.
