U of T Jazz faculty and alumna Barbara Hannigan take home awards at the 47th annual JUNOs

27 March 2018

When the JUNO Award nominations were announced back in February, U of T Jazz faculty and alumni secured four of the five nominations in the Jazz Album of the Year: Group category. At the JUNOs Gala Awards and Dinner held March 24 in Vancouver, The North received the top prize, a recording featuring saxophonist Mike Murley, Professor and Jazz Studies area head,  and piano faculty David Braid, along with drummer Anders Morgensen and bassist Johnny Åman. Braid and Murley are both multiple-award winners, and this year's win is the second in a row in this category for Mike Murley, who won with band Metalwood for 2017's Twenty.

Alumna and recent U of T honorary degree recipient Barbara Hannigan continues her winning streak for Crazy Girl Crazy, her album of music by Berg, Berio and Gershwin with the Ludwig Orchestra. Performing the dual role of soprano and conductor on the recording, Hannigan can now add a JUNO for Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral to the Grammy Award she won earlier this year. Congratulations to all the 2018 JUNO Award nominees and winners! We wish you continued success.
