Aemilia Moser, a recent graduate of our MMus Opera program (2025), has recently won the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition in Brandon, Manitoba.

In addition to taking first prize, Aemilia was also awarded the prize for best performance of the commissioned work. She also chose to include in her program a composition by Maria Eduarda Mendes Martins, a current DMA student in our composition program.

The Eckhardt-Gramatté is one of Canada's most prestigious national music competitions, celebrating exceptional young Canadian performers. It is a significant career milestone and brings real visibility to the institutions, teachers, and programs that have supported these artists.

Another current MMus Opera student Camille Labonté also placed third in the same competition.

In addition to Aemilia, other students under Elizabeth McDonald also made their marks in this competition. In 2014, soprano Alexandra Smither (MusBacPerf 2014) became the youngest finalist in the history of the E-Gré, competing alongside fellow UofT soprano Brittany Rae (MusBacPerf 2014). Alexandra went on to win the competition in 2017, and Brittany followed with her own first prize win in 2020.

In other news this season, our alumna Gabrielle Turgeon won the OSM Competition, and then went on to compete in the Finals of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in New York.
