Carnegie Hall Performances of Faculty Works
This fall featured Carnegie Hall performances of two of our faculty’s works!
On November 3rd, the Ars Activa Foundation presented “Gala Concert for the 1000th Anniversary of the Kingdom of Poland”, a journey through a thousand years of Polish music. This concert, co-financed by Poland's Senate, commemorated the millennium of the coronation of Poland’s first king in 1025. The program featured Polish works from medieval times to today, including Prof. Norbert Palej’s (Composition) one-hour-long oratorio „Ordo Coronationis” („Coronation Rite”), composed to celebrate the anniversary, based on historical Latin texts, and scored for mixed choir, solo voices (soprano, tenor, bass), solo violin, percussion and string orchestra.
This year, the Faculty of Music had the honour of hosting jazz great Sean Jones as the John and Claudine Bailey Visitor in Jazz. The culminating event was a feature concert with Sean and Prof. Shirantha Beddage’s (Jazz) student ensemble, the 10 o'Clock Jazz Orchestra. Prof. Beddage’s arrangement of Sean’s tune, "The Storm", was written for that concert. It was later performed this summer at Carnegie Hall by the NYO Jazz band, a conglomerate of the top high school jazz players from across the States. Sean is the leader of this band. Here’s a link to the NYO Jazz performance of “The Storm” in Brazil this summer, featuring Sean as soloist. Note: The video is available for a limited time only, so enjoy today!
