International Congress of Voice Teachers
Congratulations to all involved in the 11th International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) from July 31st -August 3rd, a collaborative organizational and hosting effort of the Faculty of Music, the National Association for Teachers of Singing (NATS), and Royal Conservatory of Music. Taking place every four years, ICVT offers diverse research, praxis, and performance opportunities to attendees. Bravo to organizing committee members Prof. Darryl Edwards, ICVT Coordinating Committee Chair (Voice); Prof. Torin Chiles, ICVT Coordinating Committee Co-Chair (alumn, Western University); Prof. Vicki St. Pierre, ICVT Coordinating Committee Co-Chair (alumn, Mount Allison University); Adrianne Pieczonka, Royal Conservatory of Music Coordinating Chair (alumn); Prof. Monica Whicher, UofT Faculty of Music Coordinating Chair (Voice); Prof. Christina Haldane, Finance Co-Chair (alumn, Mount Allison University); and Prof. Lorna MacDonald, ICVT Program Committee (Lois Marshall Chair in Voice Studies).
Presentations by UofT community and students included "Every Voice Matters: Welcoming and Supporting Voices of People with Disabilities" by Dr. Laura Menard (Research & Partnerships Office) & PhD student Carol Ratzlaff; "Teaching Tenors Today: A Navigational Playground with Multiple Rewards" by Prof. Darryl Edwards; "'Putting the T in Tenor': Journeying Through Transition and Masculinizing Hormone Therapy as an Undergraduate Singer" by undergraduate Voice student Luca McCauley, Dr. Helen Becqué (alumn) and Prof. Darryl Edwards; "What's Bred in the Bone - Traditional Music in the Voice Curriculum" by Lorna MacDonald; poster presentation "Encounters with Opportunities: Neurodivergence in Singing Pathways" by Celeste Morgan Thordarson (alumn) and Kathryn Tremills; poster presentation "The Effect of Chemotherapy on the Singing Voice" by Dr. Shantelle Przybylo (DMA 2023); and Anna Caroline Boyes (DMA 2025) was featured in the master class given by Karen Slack.
Seven current graduate Voice Pedagogy students were subsidized and able to attend ICVT through the Voice Pedagogy program.
