Prof. Farzaneh Hemmasi: Releases
Prof. Farzaneh Hemmasi (Ethnomusicology) celebrates the release of several interrelated media this fall around the vinyl re-release of Iranian diaspora pop music cassettes titled Tehrangeles Vice: Iranian Diaspora Pop, 1983-1993. Prof. Hemmasi contributed extensive liner notes to the project, a collaborative effort spearheaded by executive producer Zachary Asdourian. The tracks were compiled by Asdourian and Anaïs Gyulbudaghyan from the archives of prolific Iranian American music company Taraneh Enterprises; remastered by Grammy Award winning audio restoration experts at Osiris Studio; and released on Asdourian and Gyulbudaghyan’s label Discotchari. Prof. Hemmasi gave a talkon this project at the Elahé Omidyar Mir-Djalali Institute of Iranian Studies, in collaboration with the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies, San Francisco State University and the Iranian & Persian Gulf Studies Program, Oklahoma State University on this project on November 17th. Prof. Hemmasi was also featured in an interview about the project for an article in the Los Angeles Times (link) and appeared on NPR’s show All Things Considered, which aired on October 30th.
