Antonio Vivaldi served for almost 40 years at the Ospedale della Pietà orphanage, where boys were not admitted; there he gave instruction to an exclusive ensemble “privileggiate di coro.” The soprano and alto sections of the Schola Cantorum offer this Gloria as an homage to the brilliant work of Vivaldi at his Church of La Pietà. The genius of a youthful Handel created the thrilling Dixit Dominus, a grand work featuring double choir and orchestra. Mozart wrote “Handel understands effect better than any of us — when he chooses, he strikes us like a thunderbolt.”
