In the fall of 1946, an unprecedented and unique course of instruction was introduced into the Senior School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Conceived by its first director, Arnold Walter, the birth of the Opera School - now the Opera Division of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music - marked not only the beginning of operatic training in Canada but the very genesis of opera produced in Toronto. In celebration of our 75th anniversary, we reflect on the school’s important history while sharing our forward looking vision for opera’s future.
