What were English poet W.H. Auden and composer Benjamin Britten doing in the U.S.A. during World War II? Collaborating on an operetta about lumberjacks, of course!
Join us to discuss the contexts for UofT Opera’s spring production of Paul Bunyan. Featuring a panel on folklore and Broadway aspirations, the politics of exile, and queer identity in the ‘30s and ‘40s with political historian Catherine Ellis, musicologists Ken McLeod and Hilary Donaldson, and resident stage director Michael Albano. Plus engaging lectures by eminent literary scholar Edward Mendelson on Auden’s libretto, and scholar-conductor Paul Kildea —with tenor Matthew Dalen — on Britten’s composition.
