Course Description: Rooted in the music and street culture of Black and Latin American urban youth amid the rise of the post-industrial crisis, Hip Hop culture has been a masculinist terrain since its inception. While women and female identifying persons have been among the culture’s creators, they have not always been adequately commemorated as part of Hip Hop’s grand narrative, nor have they been appropriately credited for their contributions and innovations. Working against tremendous odds to contest their ongoing marginalization and objectification, women in Hip Hop developed gender-specific strategies to carve out greater space, access, expression, and representation. Using a variety of archival texts and mediums, this course will explore Hip Hop’s origins and the politics of historical erasure; race, ethnicity and Blackness; gender, queerness, and intersectionality; misogyny, gendered violence, and exploitation; resistive practices, sounds and performances; negotiations with power, capitalism and industry; and the rise of Hip Hop Feminisms.

Course Description: Students are assigned to small jazz ensembles by audition, rehearsing with faculty for two hours and independently for an additional hour each week. Repertoire ranges from traditional to contemporary jazz styles. Attendance at all assigned sessions is required.
Class Schedule: Small Jazz Ensemble duties include two hours of coaching each week with the assigned small Jazz ensemble (times TBD). Coaches are required to attend and evaluate group performances at the Rex and Walter Hall (other venues TBA). The final ensemble recording project will be supervised and evaluated by the coach in April. If a coach has a conflict with attendance at a performance, a suitable substitute should be arranged in consultation with the Area Head for Jazz Studies.

Course Description: This course is a practical study and performance of advanced solo vocal music in a private coaching and master class format. The repertoire will be chiefly selected from Lieder, Mélodie, and art song, but will also include orchestral songs and arias. Course Description: This course is an introduction to music psychology, a field concerned with the processes of music perception and production, responses to music, and the use of music in everyday life. Representative topics include: the role of music as a mediating stimulus for non-musical responses, physiological foundations of music perception and production, models of mood and emotion in music, the relationship between music and language, and models of music cognition. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to understand and critique basic science research and clinical research studies, design and implement an experimental research protocol, interpret research data, and articulate future scientific inquiries pertaining to applications of music in healthcare. Course requirements include weekly reading responses and a semester-long research project on a topic of the student’s choosing.

Course Description: This course offers students tools for analysis of and hands-on training in audio and video recording, as well as curation of completed projects for researchers, performers, and composers. Based on the expanded canon of music documentaries, field recordings, podcasts, as well as participatory and community-engaged multimedia creation, students are introduced to the theory and practice of audiovisual recording. Readings draw from music studies, media studies, sound studies, film studies, and visual anthropology. Students are encouraged to incorporate projects from their respective programs into coursework, including community-based research and iterative editing methodologies. Work in progress is presented for peer feedback, and upon completion in a final presentation with a written reflection piece. Students may also submit proposals for exhibition curation, with analyses and supplementary literature reviews

Duties: Coordinate practicum placement of students in community piano program. Monitor and mentor student teaching. Course Description: An introduction into the history and functionality of the piano. This course touches on nomenclature for the instrument, how the action works, and how better understanding the structure and mechanics of the instrument can enhance the playing of a pianist.

Students study fundamentals of Standard Chinese diction using two phonetic systems, Hanyu Pinyin and International Phonetic Alphabet through weekly diction exercises and in class performances.
