Performance Office Collaborative Piano

Information for Collaborative Pianists and Students

  • Policy and Practice for Contract Pianists: Instrumental Classes PMU105-405

    Workload:

    • Each instrumentalist required to take PMU105-405 will be allotted 7 hours of collaborative piano time PER ACADEMIC YEAR.  The 7 hours would be distributed as follows:
    • 3 hours in the fall (2 performances of half hour each, plus 2 hours of rehearsal), and 4 hours in the spring (2-3 performances of half hour each plus 2 and a half hours of rehearsal).
    • If an instrumentalist does not use their allotted 3 hours in the fall term, they would not be permitted to carry over any remaining hours into the spring.  This will require that each instrumentalist is organized ahead of time.
    • If a student wants to perform more and/or book more collaborative piano hours, they will be responsible for paying for those hours directly to the pianist at the regular rate of pay. Collaborative pianists are not obligated to accept more hours.
    • Instrumentalists must provide scores to their pianists with a minimum of 3-weeks. Special note: if a pianist is asked to learn repertoire for a public event (masterclass with distinguished visitors, public performances, etc.) with insufficient time, it is reasonable for the pianist to decline and for the student to be responsible to find alternate arrangements.

    Room Booking:

    • Instrumentalists are responsible for booking practice rooms for rehearsal with their collaborative pianists. Instrumentalists will confirm the rehearsal location/practice room number with their collaborative pianist 24-hours in advance of the rehearsal.  Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the rehearsal/forfeiture of the hour.
  • The Faculty of Music is pleased to be able to offer a fund to provide supplementary support to undergraduate students for expenses related to collaborative pianists (accompanists, coaches). Students in any undergraduate program and year of study are eligible to apply. The funding can be used to support the use of pianists in any curricular activity (e.g., applied lessons, juries, recitals, performance classes). Students may receive up to a maximum of $400 in support per year.  Amount available per student is dependent on the number of applicants.

Applications for a Collaborative Pianist Grant will be reviewed once each semester.

Applications ask students to describe their expected use of collaborative pianists so that the review committee can identify factors that lead to a large number of pianist hours being required by a particular student in a given semester.  Please note that this is an academic-needs and NOT a financial-needs based grant.

Applications must be supported by an email to performance.music@utoronto.ca from the applied instructor or faculty member teaching a performance course in which the student is enrolled, verifying that they support the student's application.

Students whose applications are approved will have the grant posted to their student accounts on ACORN. Outstanding fees will be deducted, and the remainder will be deposited into the bank account on ACORN. Students who do receive a Collaborative Pianist Grant should include this funding in the budget of their next bursary application.
