Financial Aid
Financial Support Options
We know that financing a university education is no small undertaking. It may involve a mix of financial resources—from student awards to government grants to part-time employment.
The University of Toronto’s Policy on student financial support states that no student admitted to a program at the university should be unable to enroll or complete the program due to lack of financial means. This policy is applicable only to Canadian citizens, landed immigrants and protected persons and assumes that students will first access the government aid for which they are eligible.
Find below the options that are applicable to you.
Information regarding the various provincial loan programs is available on the Financial Aid website.
OSAP (for Ontario Students)
For Ontario residents, the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a government financial aid program made up of a mix of grants and loans. In addition to applying for OSAP funding, you should also apply for the University of Toronto Advance Planning for Students (UTAPS) Program which may provide additional opportunities for funding. .

UTAPS
UTAPS stands for the University of Toronto Advanced Planning for Students program. It is the University of Toronto’s largest need-based support program and covers the financial gap between a student’s actual education costs and the costs recognized by their provincial/territorial government student financial aid program. In other words, UTAPS covers unmet financial need.
Through UTAPS, U of T provides non-repayable grants to students to help cover this financial need gap, or unmet need.
To be eligible for UTAPS funding, you must:
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a protected person (recognized convention refugee); and
- Be enrolled in full time studies for the fall and winter session; and
- Be receiving the maximum amount of OSAP, other provincial/territorial government student aid, or First Nation’s band funding but this funding doesn’t cover all of your university costs (i.e., you have unmet need); and
- Be enrolled in an eligible program.
- Note: International students and part-time students are not eligible.
