Course Load

All students in the Faculty of Music working towards a degree program are required to be registered in a full-time course load for all four years of study. A range of 4.0 – 6.0 credits constitutes a full-time course load. Students who have completed four years of full-time study are eligible to be enrolled in a part-time course load for any additional years of study. A load less than 4.0 credits for the fall-winter session constitutes a part-time course load.

All students working towards an Artist Diploma are also required to be registered in a full-time course load for all three years of study; 4.0 credits is the minimum annual credit requirement.

Students registered with Accessibility Services, that qualify for a reduced course load as an accommodation are eligible to register as a part-time student, regardless of their year of study. The course load is determined on a case by case basis, in consultation with the Registrar and their accessibility advisor.

Additional Notes

The Faculty will run diagnostics during the course enrolment periods to monitor over-enrolment in courses. Students enrolled in loads greater than what is permitted will be removed at any time from courses that add up to the excess.

Understanding your program chart

All degree programs require completion of a minimum of 20 credits. The breakdown of the individual program course requirements is outlined in the charts specific to the Program of Study (for those in the Bachelor of Music) and by Instrument (for those in the Bachelor of Music in Performance).

You must follow the program requirements in the Academic Calendar applicable to the year you enter the program. If you complete the Exploratory Year, you will will follow the specific program requirements of your chosen specialization according to the Academic Calendar of the year you entered the Faculty of Music.

Enrolling in Courses

1

Plan your Basic Music Courses first

The first step to consider is the times for your required Basic Music courses; many of these will  be automatically enrolled for you. Create a plan for what your weekly schedule will look like for these courses using the Timetable Builder.

Remember to leave room for your Major Ensemble which will be assigned after the placement auditions in September. All Classical Major Ensemble rehearsals are scheduled between 3-5pm on weekdays. Large and Small Jazz Ensembles are scheduled throughout the week (they do not conflict with any of the required Jazz courses). Once placements have been finalized by the Performance Office, the Registrar’s Office will enrol you in correct course code.

2

Add courses that are required for your Program of Study

Check the appropriate chart in the  Academic Calendar for your specific program requirements; it is recommended that you enrol in all the courses that have a credit value listed under Year 1.  You are responsible for checking that you meet any relevant conditions for enrolment  in course(s) e.g. prerequisites.

For students in Exploratory Year, choose courses from your intended area of study e.g. CMU112H and CMU113H Introduction to Composition I and II.

Refer to the Timetable or Timetable Builder to establish the times for these courses, by selecting the appropriate meeting section. Check the times to make sure there are no conflicts with your required courses.

3

Choose Music Electives of interest

Every program requires the completion of a specific number of music electives, but it is not required in your first year. As you build your timetable, look at your course load and determine if you can accommodate an elective.

Refer to the Timetable or Timetable Builder to establish the times and locations for these electives. Check the times to make sure there are no conflicts with your required courses. Remember to check that you meet any relevant conditions for the course (i.e. prerequisites, etc.).

4

Choose your Arts & Science course(s) i.e. breadth electives

Refer to the Arts and Science Academic Calendar Timetable Builder; there are many options, but remember that not all courses in the Academic Calendar are offered each year. Pay attention to the enrolment instructions in the Timetable Builder for Arts & Science courses. Some courses may have additional enrolment procedures. For example, language courses may require a placement test, prior to enrolment.

Breadth electives may only be added during the second round of enrolment.

Reminder: You may enrol in any Faculty of Arts & Science course listed in the Arts & Science Calendar (except for MUS courses), subject to limited enrolment conditions and to pre- and co-requisite requirements. You may also enrol in courses at the Mississauga (UTM) and Scarborough (UTSC) campuses to complete breadth electives. (enrolment dates may vary for courses on these campuses.)

5

Once you have selected all your courses, add up the credit weights

It is recommended you aim for a course load between 5.0-5.5 credits and remember that your major ensemble will be added in September. See above for more details on Course Load.

6

Use ACORN to request the courses and sections you want

Enrolment Cart

As you’re planning, you have the ability to save courses in your enrolment cart on ACORN. This feature is available for music courses and makes enrolling faster and easier! Pre-load these courses into your cart to help you plan ahead; when the course enrolment date arrives you      must log into ACORN and enrol in each course (you will not be automatically enrolled).

First Round of Enrolment

Enrol in your Music courses early! Enrolment opens at 6:00am EDT on July 9 for music courses only and continues until July 25. Click on the “Enrol and Manage” option to add your courses either through the enrolment cart, or through the search field.

Second Round of Enrolment

Enrolment in Arts & Science electives opens during this second round (6:00am EDT July 30 – September 15). There is no access to Faculty of Arts & Science courses on August 5. Courses will fill up quickly, so the earlier you enrol the better; also consider having back-up courses in case your first-choice courses are full, and be prepared to use the waitlist option.

During this second round of enrolment, you will also be able to make changes to your enrolment in Music courses and add any that were priority enrolment only in the first round (space permitting).

Note: Enrolment for all Second term (S) courses continues until mid-January - see sessional dates for the last date to add S courses.

Once you have enrolled in courses, you can view your personal timetable from ACORN.

Exemptions

Any credit(s) earned through the exemption process for any course must be made up with other course(s) of at least the same credit weight. The courses you select to replace exempted TMU credits must count towards Music Electives (i.e. music courses that are not considered part of your program requirements). Arts & Science electives do not qualify.
