Performance Office Jazz (Undergraduate and Masters)

Jazz Applied Music Evaluation

Masterclass Attendance Requirement: There will be a 1% deduction to the final Applied grade for every missed Masterclass. This applies to all Undergraduate students.

Juries and Recitals are adjudicated Performance exams.

The University has policies governing the completion of such requirements. Students unable to perform their Jury/Recital for medical or other extenuating documented circumstances are required to:

  • Inform the Performance Office and their Applied Instructor immediately.
  • Undergraduate Students must file a petition to defer to the Committee on Academic Standing, through the Registrar.
  • Masters Students must refer to the Masters Recital Scheduling and Deferrals document.

Jury Information for Undergraduates

Specific jury requirements by Instrument can be found on the Performance Office's SharePoint page.

Applied Jazz teachers, in consultation with their students and coordinated with their improvisation courses, create repertoire lists of 20 tunes per year of study for Jazz Performance and 10 tunes per year for Jazz Comprehensive/Music Education.

At least 50% of the repertoire lists must include music composed and/or performed by Canadian, women, BIPOC or LGBTQ2S+ musicians.

Each student will create their personal “fakebook” of lead sheets. This fakebook will constitute the repertoire on which the student will be tested on their jury examination and is a cumulative list, i.e., 20 (10) tunes in first year, 40 (20) tunes in second year and so on. The student’s yearly list should contain a maximum of one blues and one rhythm changes tune. A numbered table of contents, including acknowledgement of Canadian, women, BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+ composers, must be provided and signed by the applied teacher.

Questions about repertoire selection should be brought to the Area Head. When permissions of the Area Head are required, approval must be submitted in writing to the Performance Office.

Recital Information for Undergraduates and Masters

Promoting Inclusive Representation in Music Performances

The Faculty of Music is committed to the inclusion of under-represented composers in performances by faculty and students and expects to see this meaningfully reflected in program content of juries and recitals at all levels.

Students demonstrating exceptional achievement in programming may be nominated for special performance opportunities in the subsequent academic year.

Jazz and jazz related repertoire should reflect the diverse nature of the history of the music with attention to works by women and Black American performers and composers, who have been influential in the development of the music while enduring bias and systemic racism.
