While students pursue personalized programs aligned with their unique talents and professional aspirations, Music Technology is a collaborative experience uniting people of diverse backgrounds and interests.
Whatever their musical practices, skills, or goals, program participants work in concert to explore music using digital and other technologies. A culminating major project provides opportunities for creating a digital media object such as a recording, installation, or live multimedia performance. Drawing on contributions from singers, performers, or producers as necessary, individuals emerge with professional-grade work demonstrating their music technology skills, networking ability, and musicality.
Attentive instructors from the Faculty of Music provide expert guidance and support. In an inclusive learning environment welcoming different approaches, interests, and points of view, students develop technical and creative capabilities with real-world application.
Music Technology sets students on a path to excellence as creative technologists in the 21st Century. It encourages experimentation and invention through leading-edge technology. Students are guaranteed time to develop and record projects in a fully equipped, multi-track, multi-room Electronic Music Studio (EMS). Our flexible, inter-operable EMS spaces support prototyping and testing, a wide variety of digital media production, industry-standard hybrid analog/digital recording, and advanced teaching.

Taught by distinguished academic experts and professionals from various creative industries, Music Technology offers significant opportunities for technology-focused research, creation, and performance in multi-disciplinary contexts. Options include applying technology to music production for film and video, gaming, interactive digital media, and other creative arts.

Students study the fundamentals of music entrepreneurship and the challenges of digital media distribution in the streaming age. Going from classical flute to music technology was not what anyone expected from me (myself included), but I now have a huge appreciation for the other side of music and what goes on behind the scenes of every performance - quality technicians can really make or break a concert. Learning about the science of sound and audio gear, how to use technology creatively, and how to capture the best possible quality for recordings has opened a career path in music with so many different kinds of opportunities. The beauty of the music tech program at U of T is that almost everyone comes from different musical or technological backgrounds, and has vastly different interests, so every cohort gets to learn something a little different from the experiences of their peers.
