Interdisciplinary Music Studies Overview

Interdisciplinary Music Studies is where curiosity paths and career paths converge. An exciting array of Music and Arts and Science electives organized around a study of music essentials equips students to cultivate their musical interests and find a career in music that’s right for them.

Discover Your Niche

Explore

Exploration lies at the heart of the student experience. Required courses in lower years provide a firm foundation in the history, theory and performance of music. In upper years, students customize their studies by choosing from an exceptional range of electives offered by the Music Faculty and the Faculty of Art and Science.

Choose

Opportunities include honing performance skills, performing in ensembles, and working toward a minor or major in another discipline. Students may choose non-music Arts and Science electives for up to 8 of their 20 degree credits.

Get Certified

Within Interdisciplinary Music Studies, students may take courses outside of core music programming that lead to formally acknowledged certificates granted in conjunction with their degrees. Examples of subjects for which certificates are awarded include Health Applications in Music, Music Technology, Popular Music Studies, Ethnomusicology, and Piano Pedagogy.

Prepare

Interdisciplinary Music Studies prepares students for a range of music-related careers, professional programs, and graduate study options. Exploration of career opportunities is a formal part of the curriculum. Students learn about careers in such areas as arts administration and management, music journalism, entertainment law, music and health, and technology.

Studying in small classes, collaborating with peers, and engaging with receptive faculty are central to this study area.
