What to expect

Study music at a major world university in the core of an exciting multicultural city. The Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto provides exchange and visiting students opportunities to participate in rewarding learning experiences. Classical, jazz, and world music courses in performance, theory, technology, history, and culture are among our offerings.

Exchange Students

The inbound exchange program is open to students from partner institutions who are in good academic standing, meet our English language requirements, and are able to demonstrate the ability to perform at the university level on their major instrument.

Exchange applicants must apply through the inbound exchange office.  Begin by finding your home institution on the inbound-exchange website and following the steps to apply.

Visiting Students

Students wishing to complete their last year at U of T Music, or to visit for a year while receiving their degree from another institution, must present a "Letter of Permission" and official transcripts from their home university, meet the academic requirements of the University of Toronto, and complete an audition/interview (if seeking to take performance courses).  An academic advisor from the home university should be consulted with regard to the equivalencies of courses offered here at the Faculty of Music, to ensure concordance with degree requirements.  All programs begin in September.  

Applying early is recommended, as space availability may be an issue.

Guidelines for Visiting Student Applicants

Apply early as spaces are limited. 

Deadlines to apply: January 15 if requesting Performance courses (JMU, PMU), July 22 if requesting only other courses (CMU, DMU, EMU, HMU, TMU and Arts & Science)

The following are required:

  1. List of desired courses approved by your institution
  2. Letter of Permission
  3. Official Transcripts
  4. Visiting Student application
  5. Music Questionnaire (only for visiting students applying for JMU or PMU courses)  

    Visiting Students applying for performance courses will be required to take part in an audition/interview.  Jazz students will submit a video for pre-screening and will be invited to an audition/interview based on the evaluation of the pre-screening video. 

  • Obtain the most current University of Toronto, Faculty of Music calendar to select courses. The Calendar and Timetable for the upcoming September Session are published in June of each year. If you need to make the earlier deadline, use the Calendar from the current session to select your courses. Please pay close attention to the prerequisites required for each course.

  • You must also provide a Letter of Permission from your home institution. This is a letter from your institution granting you permission to take courses outside of your home institution. This letter does not guarantee that you will be accepted at the University of Toronto, but is a necessary document for filing an application. It is a good idea to include additional courses on your Letter of Permission to have some flexibility with your elective courses. Once admitted, you will be responsible for enrolling in courses, verifying your prerequisites with the academic department and paying your fees.

  • Your application must include an official transcript from your home institution. Your application cannot be processed and/or a decision rendered until all documentation is complete.

  • If you are not applying for JMU or PMU courses

    If you are not applying for any JMU or PMU courses, you must pay your application fee of $69 CAD online prior to submitting your Visiting Student application.

    In order to pay the visiting student application fee, go to  https://ssp.music.utoronto.ca/visiting/ to submit your payment online.  Once you receive the confirmation email with your payment confirmation number, enter the confirmation number on the Visiting Student application form, and submit your Visiting Student Application form and supporting documents to registrar.music@utoronto.ca under the subject heading Visiting Student Application by 22 July.

    If you are applying for JMU or PMU courses

    Students applying for JMU or PMU courses must also complete a Music Questionnaire. Students applying for any of these performance courses will pay a $69 CAD application fee online when submitting the Music Questionnaire. If you are requesting performance courses : email your Visiting Student application and other supporting documentation to: undergrad.music@utoronto.ca . Use the Subject heading Visiting Student Application.

    Once your application is submitted, the $69 CAD fee is non-refundable, even if we are unable to accept you as a Visiting Student

    *Visiting Student Application will be available here in October.

  • All visiting students must submit the Visiting Student application.  However, if you are requesting any JMU or PMU courses, an audition/interview is required. You must also complete the supplementary Music Questionnaire by the January 15th deadline. You will be informed as soon as possible after receipt of your application of an audition date and time or recording guidelines for those unable to do a live audition. Auditions are held in February and early March
