Music for non-Music Students Engineering

Overview

What to expect

Combine a passion for music with an interest in engineering. The Engineering Music Performance Minor focuses on applied individual and small-group instruction in solo instrumental or chamber music settings. The Certificate in Music Technology provides opportunities for exploring connections between engineering, music, and technology. Students complete the equivalent of three full credits for the minor and 1.5 full credits for the certificate.

Why they stand out

Engineering students gain access to applied music instruction and/or music technology courses typically available only to Music Faculty students.

Who they are for

The minor accommodates engineering undergraduates seeking some options to study music technology but primarily wishing to develop their creativity as musicians. The certificate concentrates on music technology, with some options for studying music theory, culture, and history.

The Faculty of Music does not administer this program. Engineering students should contact the Engineering Registrar’s Office for enrolment, registrar@engineering.utoronto.ca.

Outcomes

Opportunities for study

Students have a means of pursuing their musical interests even while studying engineering. Both programs will appeal to motivated students prepared to accept a course load marginally greater than that normally required for their engineering degree.

Opportunities after graduation

These programs help equip students for careers in technology combining music and engineering.

Postgraduate opportunities

The Faculty of Music offers an advanced degree in music technology at the master’s level.

Curriculum

Core Courses

Performance minor students receive applied performance instruction and study music theory and sensory communication (totalling two full credits). Certificate students study computer applications in music (a 0.5 credit).

Electives

Performance minor students choose two electives (totalling one full credit) from a list including courses on music technology, theory, history, and culture. Certificate students choose between a music theory course and a sensory communication course (each a 0.5 credit). They add one choice from a list of courses on music technology, theory, history, and culture (each a 0.5 credit).
