Mission Statement

A supportive community in one of the world’s most diverse and dynamic cities, the Faculty of Music seeks consistently to achieve excellence across a broad range of research and creative professional activities, providing significant academic and artistic experiences and outcomes.

Strategic Research Plan 2024-2028

The Faculty of Music’s Strategic Research Plan (SRP) provides a roadmap for research over the next five years (2024–2028). It is informed by the recommendations of the 2022 Academic Strategic Planning, Climate and Culture Review, as well as our faculty's Values & Principles and Community Guidelines

The 2024–2028 SRP reflects the diversity, value, and impact of the faculty’s research and creative professional activities and to define and elaborate its areas of research focus. It is designed to advance our collective research vision and goals in the Faculty of Music and builds from the strategic vision that is articulated within the University of Toronto SRP, as well as the University’s commitment to fostering Strategic Initiatives that increase our capacity to support large-scale, high-impact interdisciplinary research. 

  • Objective 1.1 Demonstrate the value our faculty brings to academia and the arts. 

    • Implementation:  Share knowledge about the diversity of music research communities across the higher education and culture sectors through an annual Music Research Festival 

    Objective 1.2 Improve the communication of the robust research occurring at the Faculty of Music

    • Implementation: Develop a comprehensive research communications strategy in coordination with grant holders, research centres, academic areas, the music library, the Office of the Dean, the Office of Advancement, the Performance Office, as well as support staff in marketing and publicity.
  • Objective 2.1 Create an environment to enable the full spectrum of research and innovation from conception to impact. 

    • Implementation: Build supports to facilitate preparation and submission of applications through matching funds and other resources.
    • Implementation: Connecting across the tri-campus to leverage the expertise of existing within our university to meet the unique needs of our community members.

    Objective 2.2 Increase application rates among faculty eligible for PI status (particularly in creative research areas) 

    • Implementation:  Provide learning opportunities for faculty on the Tri-Council funding mechanisms and on other external funding agencies (including federal, provincial, and municipal arts & heritage councils) relevant to music research
    • Implementation:  Engage eligible faculty members who represent subdivisions and/or areas of research not recently represented by current tri-council applicant pool. 
  • Objective 3.1 Train and mentor graduate researchers and creators

    • Implementation: Create a space for learning and dialogue on pathways for research and entrepreneurship 
    • Implementation: Formalize the Graduate Research Series of workshops/information sessions into a regular and recurring calendar of events, in coordination with the Music Graduate Office.

    Objective 3.2 Cultivate strong and sustainable post-graduate opportunities for research and creation

    • Implementation: Maintain consistency of our existing post-doctoral program, expand the program to include career development across sectors. 
  • Objective 4.1: Build and sustain research and creative partnerships 

    • Implementation: Support existing local and international partnerships with the Faculty of Music in coordination with the Performance Office and Advancement
    • Implementation: Identify new cross-sectoral partners to advance research agendas and develop stakeholder relationships based on reciprocity

    Objective 4.2: promote projects that encourage community engagement with our academic mission 

    • Implementation: Provide resources to faculty members and students for community-engaged research to support project development and management
    • Implementation: Collaborate on interdisciplinary research with arts organizations and not-for-profits
