An audition and interview (audition/interview) is required for all applicants to assess musical proficiency for all undergraduate programs.

Repertoire guidelines: Classical

Before reviewing the requirements, determine which category applies to you to ensure you prepare the appropriate repertoire: 

  • Applying to Performance (alone or alongside another program)?  Follow the Bachelor of Music in Performance requirements for your instrument.

  • Applying to Composition, Interdisciplinary Music Studies, Music Education, or Exploratory Year? Follow the Bachelor of Music requirements for your instrument.

  • Applying to Music Technology & Digital Media (MTDM) and another Bachelor of Music program?  Follow the Bachelor of Music requirements for your instrument.

  • Applying to MTDM and the Bachelor of Music in Performance program?  Follow the Bachelor of Music in Performance requirements for your instrument.

  • Applying only to Music Technology & Digital Media (MTDM)? See the requirements listed under Music Technology & Digital Media (no other program choice).

  • Applying to the Artist Diploma? Follow the Bachelor of Music in Performance/Artist Diploma requirements for your instrument.

All applicants, whether auditioning in person or by recording, must adhere to the audition requirements for their instrument/program as listed below. Failure to do so may jeopardize eligibility for admission to the Faculty of Music.

Repertoire guidelines: Jazz

Applicants to all Jazz programs (Interdisciplinary Music Studies, Music Education, Performance, Music Technology & Digital Media) must follow a two-step audition process.

  1. Record a pre-screening video to be submitted with the Music Questionnaire.
  2. Based on the pre-screening video submission, select applicants will be invited to an official audition using pre-approved tunes. 

Applicants must follow the Accompaniment Guidelines for both the pre-screening and official audition.

All applicants must adhere to the audition requirements for their instrument as listed below. Failure to do so may jeopardize eligibility for admission to the Faculty of Music.

Audition method

Your audition method (in person or by recording) is determined by the program(s) you apply to and how far you live from Toronto.

Accompaniment guidelines

Classical accordion, guitar, harp, harpsichord, percussion and piano auditions do not require any accompaniment for their in-person or recorded audition.

All other instruments require accompaniment.

  • Classical applicants: If you are applying on any brass/string/woodwind instrument or voice, please follow the guidelines below regarding piano accompaniment for your in-person or recorded audition.   Exception: If you are applying exclusively to Music Technology & Digital Media (Classical) you will perform your recorded audition unaccompanied; please see audition requirements.

  • Jazz applicants: If you are applying to any Jazz program you must perform with a rhythm section following the guidelines below.

A tentative schedule of audition dates for 2027 applicants will be posted in the fall. Please check back for updates.

All applicants should be ready to audition as early as February 1.

Music Technology Digital Media (Classical) Applicants

Jazz Applicants

Classical Audition/Interview

You can expect 2-3 faculty members/instructors on your adjudication/interview panel whether you are online or in-person. 

All classical in-person auditions are held in the Edward Johnson Building and you will be provided a warm-up room 30 minutes before your scheduled audition time.

Performance

In-Person: You will be asked to perform select pieces (or excerpts) from the repertoire list you have prepared based on the audition requirements. Please bring one copy of scores for the audition panel.  

Recorded:  You must submit an audio-visual recording for each of the repertoire pieces required for your instrument/program by January 31, ensuring you follow the recorded audition guidelines.

Skills Assessment

In-Person and Recorded:  You may be asked to identify intervals and chords, and sing or playback a short melody.  As part of the assessment, you may also be asked to sight-read a short piece on your instrument and/or sight-sing a short piece.  

Note: The skills assessment will be completed as part of the online interview for applicants auditioning by recording.

Interview

In-Person and Recorded:  During the interview, you will be asked questions to assess your knowledge of repertoire for your instrument, including composer information and structural features of chosen audition repertoire. The audition panel will also engage you in discussion to learn more about your musical interests and career goals.

Music Technology & Digital Media (Classical)

All applicants to the MTDM will complete a program-specific interview with Music Technology faculty members.

The information below applies to applicants exclusively applying to MTDM (Classical)

  • If you are applying to MTDM (Classical) and another Classical program see the Classical Audition/Interview information above.

  • If you are applying to MTDM (Jazz) see the Jazz Audition/Interview information above.

Performance

You will be submitting your audition by audio-visual recordings following both the repertoire guidelines for Music Technology & Digital Media, and the Recorded Audition Guidelines. One secure link will be submitted to your Music Questionnaire by January 31 and will be sent for review by the adjudicators.

If technology is your instrument (e.g. synthesizer, turntables, or digital audio workstation), the emphasis of your recording is on live performance, and not on autonomous playback of previously produced material.

Skills Assessment

Part of the musical assessment may also include musical skills tests such as aural skills and performance of scales, rhythms, etc., as appropriate. This will take place during the online interview. 

You will not need access to your instrument for the purposes of the online interview.

Interview

In the MTDM online interview, you will meet with faculty members from the Music Technology area to discuss your portfolio, as well as your musical, technical, and creative background, your goals, and why you are interested in this program.

Jazz Audition/Interview

You can expect 2-3 faculty members/instructors to be on your adjudication/interview panel whether in-person or online.

All in-person Jazz auditions are held in the Faculty of Music South and you will be provided a warm-up room 30 minutes before your scheduled audition time.

In-Person: You will be asked to perform the pieces (or parts of pieces) that you have prepared.  Please bring lead sheets for the rhythm section.

Recorded:  You must submit an audio-visual recording for each of the pieces required for your instrument/program by January 31, ensuring you follow the recorded audition guidelines.

The audition panel will also engage you in discussion to learn more about your musical interests and career goals.  

We recommend preparing for the interview by learning about influential jazz performers on your instrument, including their musical styles, recordings, and contributions to jazz.
