Anti-racism and Anti-oppression Committee (ARAO)

Co-Chairs: Dr. Amy Clements-Cortes (a.clements.cortes@utoronto.ca), Reshma Dhrodia, MA, MSW, RSW (edi.music@utoronto.ca)

Founded in 2020, the Anti-Racism Anti-Oppression (ARAO) Committee undertakes work crucial to the Faculty of Music and to the larger music community. A core component of our Faculty-wide commitment to anti-racist work, equity, and social justice, ARAO comprises students, staff, and faculty who work collectively to dismantle systemic racism, sexism, and oppression.

The Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Committee seeks to foster an environment where all students, faculty, and staff feel safe, represented, respected, and valued.

Committee members will join a working group to focus on a project, program, or research related to accessibility, sexual and gender diversity, race and cultural diversity, EDI trainings, and financial insecurity within our Faculty.

Community Engagement Task Force

Founded in 2021, the Task Force on Equity and Belonging (TFEB) currently focuses on establishing policy in the Faculty of Music, hiring an inaugural in-house Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and working to bring new art to our spaces. A set of guidelines about faculty and student interaction is in progress, and we look forward to welcoming our first EDI Director and artwork in the coming months.

Teaching and Learning Committee (TLC)

The Teaching and Learning Committee is committed to enacting innovation, creativity, best practices, ideas, and inspiration within the Faculty of Music. With representatives from students, faculty, the library, and administration, the members are reviewing our programs, pedagogies, and curricular options for renewal so that we may achieve our strongest, most exciting, and inclusive teaching and learning in the twenty-first century.
