BIOGRAPHY

Former principal flute in Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel, Julien Beaudiment is currently principal flute of the Orchestre de l'Opera National de Lyon and professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon (CNSMD Lyon). He previously held the principal flute position with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, making him the only French musician to achieve this distinction in a British orchestra and one of the few to do so in an American orchestra.

Originally from La Rochelle and Bordeaux, he crossed the English channel to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Paul Edmund-Davies and Averil Williams. He then entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de music de Paris, where he won the first prize of flute and chamber music in the class of Sophie Cherrier, Vincent Lucas, and Michel Moraguès. He learned from great flautists including Maxence Larrieu and Jacques Zoon.

His career has developed rapidly out of the Conservatoire de Paris. He has played as a soloist at major international concert halls, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Opéra National de Lyon, the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Kumho Art Hall in Seoul. He has appeared as a soloist with esteemed orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Orchestre de Paris, London Symphony Orchestra, and Chicago Philharmonic. As an orchestral player, he has performed under the baton of celebrated conductors including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sir Colin Davis, and Michael Tilson Thomas, as well as renowned composers such as John Adams, Peter Eötvös, and John Williams.

An enthusiastic chamber musician, Beaudiment has performed with artists including Emmanuel Pahud, Isabelle Moretti, members of the Vienna Philharmonic, and Diotima quartet, as well as jazz pianist Antoine Hervé. He is also a prize winner of the Barcelona International Duo Competition, where he performed alongside pianist Laetitia Bougnol.

Beyond classical music, Beaudiment has explored diverse genres, recording at Abbey Road Studios with pop star Sarah Brightman and collaborating with pop artists like John Legend and Ruben Blades. He recorded for the national Korean TV KBS and for American TV series such as Doctor Who. He has also worked with choreographers Régine Chopinot and Benjamin Millepied, and contributed to projects with actors Seth MacFarlane and Julie Andrews.

Teaching occupies a prominent place in his agenda. After being the artistic deputy of José Daniel Castellon's flute class at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne, he currently teaches at the CNSMD Lyon, where he succeeded his illustrious predecessors, Philippe Bernold and Maxence Larrieu. He is also a visiting professor at the Pôle Supérieur de Musique de Bordeaux and the Talent Music Masters in Brescia. His teaching engagements extend to international summer academies, including the Nice International Summer Academy, Orford Music Academy, and Cagliari International Music Academy. Beaudiment regularly conducts masterclasses worldwide at institutions such as the Juilliard School, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and conservatories across Asia, including those in Seoul, Tokyo, and Beijing.
