Biography
Dr. Arlan Vriens is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music and adjunct professor at OCAD University. His SSHRC-funded postdoctoral research concerns intersections between historically informed performance, new music, and issues of technological obsolescence, as well as the continued expansion of his doctoral work on the performance practices and embodied knowledge of the 18th century German violinist-composer Friedrich Wilhelm Rust. His prior research has been supported by SSHRC, the American Bach Society, Mitacs, the Government of Alberta, the Institute for Music in Canada, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council.
A graduate of the University of Toronto Doctor of Musical Arts program, Dr. Vriens is active as a violinist performing historical and new music, for which he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Medal and the 2022 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award; he performs on a 2024 instrument by Toronto-based luthier Itzel Ávila.
