Kaylene Chan
Biography
Kaylene Chan is a second-year PhD student in music theory. She holds a MA in music theory from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Music with Distinction from the University of Victoria, and a Diploma of Music with Distinction from Capilano University. Her doctoral research has been supported by the Ontario Graduate Scholarship and her MA research was supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Her academic interests are centered on the analysis of groove embodiment in neo-soul music, as well as vocal timbral analysis and perception, and feminist and queer music theory. She has recently presented her research at the 2024 Music Theory Midwest Conference. Kaylene is active within the UofT community, currently serving as the President of the Music Graduate Student Association (MGSA) and as the Joint Health and Safety Committee Unit 1 Faculty of Music Representative. Moreover, she works as private music theory and skills tutor for undergraduate students with the FMUA’s Student Services Program (SSP). Outside of academics, Kaylene loves going on walks, eating instant noodles, and spending time with her niece.
