Biography
Known for his virtuoso energy on stage, creative musical arrangements and an entertaining way of speaking with the audience, Peter Stoll performs constantly in Toronto with many orchestral and chamber groups, and has toured as soloist and with ensembles to the USA, across Europe and to Russia, Japan and China. In 2019 he won a Dora Mavor Moore Award as part of Best Ensemble-Opera.
Recent seasons’ solo and chamber highlights have included concerts for Music Toronto and the Maison de la Culture Frontenac in Montreal, as well as the Toronto premiere of a new work by Alexina Louie with the Gryphon Trio, and performances for visits by world-renowned composers Kryzstof Penderecki, Chen Yi, and Anders Hillborg.
In the summer of 2017, Peter toured three major Ontario festivals with the Swiss Piano Trio. In January of 2018, he performed and led master-classes at two universities in Colorado, USA. A recording of re-imagined chamber music with members of the Canadian Brass was released on the Opening Day label, and Peter recently performed the Canadian premiere of noted American wind ensemble composer Brian Balmages' concerto "Escapades" with him conducting. A new recording of a solo work by Ontario composer Frank Horvat for multiple sizes of clarinet, about controversial former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, is due for release on the Centrediscs label in October 2019.
As an orchestral clarinetist, Peter has performed on all sizes of the clarinet family as well as saxophone for many regional symphonic groups and opera orchestras, and has coached as a Mentor for the National Academy Orchestra for over 20 seasons to date.
Peter is known for his expert, detail-oriented teaching of clarinet fundamentals, as well as encouraging his students to expand their expressive impact as young artists. He teaches clarinet, chamber music, performance studies and “The Business of Music” at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. Peter is also the Winds Area Specialist for the Royal Conservatory of Music's National College of Examiners, and was the chief compiler of the 2014 Clarinet Syllabus.
