Biography
Robin Elliott is Professor of Musicology and holds the Jean A. Chalmers Chair in Canadian Music at the University of Toronto. In the field of Canadian music studies, he has published 10 edited books and volumes of music, 30 articles, and 60 reviews and shorter articles. Elliott’s interest in Canada’s musical legacy begins in the present day but extends back in time to the 19th century and earlier. He served as the English style editor for the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada (1992), and has contributed articles on Canadian music and musicians to many other leading reference works. He edited three volumes of chamber music for the Canadian Musical Heritage Society (1989, 1992, 1998), including compositions ranging in date from 1875 to 1945. His work on the composer Istvan Anhalt (1919–2012) has resulted in two co-edited books (2001, 2011), two editions of music (2005), six scholarly peer-reviewed articles (2001–2011), and two invited public lectures (2008, 2011). Themes of Elliott’s research on Anhalt include: the influence of the Holocaust on his life and art; his intellectual legacy, as manifested in his compositions and analytical writings; and his pedagogical ideas as realized in his career as a teacher of composition and music theory. For Wilfrid Laurier University Press, Elliott has co-edited three books on Canadian music (2010, 2011, 2013). For the 2013–14 academic year, Elliott was Craig Dobbin Chair of Canadian Studies at University College Dublin.
