Biography

Terry Promane is an Associate Professor in Jazz Studies, and a trombonist, prominent on the jazz and commercial music scenes in Toronto for many years. Professor Promane has long sustained an active performing career in the theatre, recording studios, and jazz clubs. He is a member of many of Toronto's most prestigious jazz groups including Dave Young/Terry Promane and Octet (JUNO nomination 2013), The Rob McConnell Tentet (Grammy Nomination/JUNO winner 2002), The Boss Brass, the Mike Murley Septet (JUNO nomination 2012), the Dave Neill Quintet, the John MacLeod Big Band (JUNO winner 2011), the Paul Read Orchestra (PRO), the Kirk MacDonald Jazz Orchestra (JUNO Nomination 2011), and Carn/Davidson 9. Many of these groups feature Terry’s original compositions and arrangements.

He was twice named 'Jazz Trombonist of the Year' by 'Jazz Report' Magazine, and nominated for three consecutive years as the National Jazz Awards' 'Trombonist of the Year' and 'Arranger of the Year'.

Terry has produced 2 CD projects with the University of Toronto 12TET. Rebirth, 2012 and Trillium Falls 2016.

As a freelance musician, Terry Promane is a first-call session player who can be heard in countless feature films, documentaries, and jingles. He has performed on the concert stage with Holly Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Mel Torme, Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin. Further career highlights include performances with Kenny Wheeler, Bill Holman, Tito Puente, Dave Valentine, Maria Schneider, Vince Mendoza, Gonzalo Rubacalba, Hilario Duran, The Jazz Cartel.
