Biography
Trombonist William Carn has emerged as one of Canada’s leading contemporary jazz trombonists and composers. He has performed internationally as well as throughout Canada. He was nominated for a 2018 Best Traditional Jazz Juno Award for the Carn Davidson 9 Murphy recording as well as being nominated in 2014 for the groups’ debut recording NINE. William was first nominated for his 2007 for his quintet’s debut release, Other Stories.
He has performed and recorded with jazz artists including Rob McConnell, Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Brian Blade, Miguel Zenon, Joel Frahm, Randy Brecker, David Binney, Kenny Wheeler, Tim Hagans, Barry Harris, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Maria Schneider, Vince Mendoza, Don Braden, Mike Murley, Hilario Duran, Andrew Downing, Jim McNeely, and John Clayton.
As a bandleader, William currently leads several critically acclaimed groups; the Carn Davidson 9 which is a chordless large ensemble dedicated to playing arrangements of the music of William Carn and Tara Davidson, The William Carn Quintet and Run Stop Run, both featuring some of Canada’s finest musicians and The William Carn Quintet.
William also enjoys a diverse freelance career in Toronto and throughout Canada. Studio and concert engagements have included Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Feist, Noel Gallagher, Johnny Reid, Sarah Slean, Janelle Monae, Buffy Saint-Marie, Tanya Tagaq, Hawksley Workman, Melissa McClelland, Luc Doucet, Emily Haynes, Kathleen Edwards, Royal Wood, Matt Dusk, Jon Secada, Peabo Bryson, Sheena Easton, Christopher Cross, Dionne Taylor, Michael Kaeshammer, Jill Barber, Emile-Claire Barlow, Sophie Millman, Jeff Healy, Colin James.
William is a Rath Trombone Artist as well as a educator & clinician. As well, William is a faculty member for both the University of Toronto Jazz Studies program, the Humber College School for Performing Arts and the Ottawa JazzWorks camp.
