Master of Music (MMus) Opera

What to expect

The Master of Music in Opera is an advanced two-year, course-intensive degree in opera performance. Students study music history and theory, opera performance practice, and opera repertoire, including repertoire suitable for professional audition. Complementing their academic studies, they receive individual applied instruction and participate in full-scale opera performances.

Opportunities for study

Students have opportunities to apply their learning in two full-scale productions with orchestra that are presented annually at the university’s MacMillan Theatre. This venue has one of the best-equipped opera stages in Canada.

Program graduates typically pursue careers as musicians in opera performance, teaching, and related areas.


Postgraduate opportunities

Successful graduates apply for entry into a variety of developing artist programs with opera companies as well as advanced diploma and Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance programs.

Core Courses

The bulk of the program consists of required courses (the equivalent of 6.5 full-year courses). Students receive individual vocal instruction (the equivalent of two full-year courses) and examine opera repertoire and performance practice (the equivalent of three full-year courses). They study critical approaches to music history and music analysis (the equivalent of 1.5 full-year courses). They also study roles in opera in two non-credit courses.

Electives

The Music Faculty provides an approved list of electives from which students choose a 0.5 full-year course.
