Article publication in Visions of Research in Music Education
Prof. Douglas Friesen, Dan School of Music, Queen’s University and Dr. Laura Menard, Research Office, Faculty of Music, published “The ‘Heart and Soul’ of music education: Towards sonic egalitarianism in classroom practice” in the most recent issue of Visions of Research in Music Education. Through this article, they explore “sonic egalitarianism” in the music classroom: the creation of conditions whereby students have equal opportunities to sound out, be loud, and perform without the expectation or demand of occupying such space sonically. In the tradition of co-writing (Richardson & St. Pierre, 2017), they share individual critical narratives, adopting critical listening positionality (Robinson, 2020), aiming to move beyond defaults in their practices.
