The Long & McQuade Jack Long Memorial Award was established in 2025 and will be awarded to undergraduate students who exemplify dedication and perseverance and have demonstrated improved improvisation skills.

Jack Long CM graduated from the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto with a Mus.Bac. degree in 1952. He spoke fondly of his time there, his professors, and the lifelong friendships he made with his classmates. It was at U of T that he met his wife, Carol Pendrith, who was also in the music program.

On why Long & McQuade decided to create this new award, Jeff Long, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, and son of Jack, remarks:

“Music education has always been at the heart of Long & McQuade’s mission. This memorial award was created to support individuals who share the same deep love of music that defined Jack Long’s life. This award honours Jack’s legacy by supporting the next generation of musicians who are dedicated to learning, performing, and living a life surrounded by music.”

The Faculty of Music made a lasting impression on Jack and his family.

“Jack often reminisced about the weekly exercise of analyzing a Bach chorale for one of his classes. Even as he got older, he continued this practice for fun, using it to keep his mind sharp and stay connected to the music he loved so much,” reflects Jeff.
